The Oxford University Department of Education prides itself on its international standing as a research-intensive department whilst being consistently rated as an outstanding provider of teacher education. In 2014 the evaluation of research in the UK (Research Excellence Framework) placed the Department as the leader for educational research in the country.

The notion of ‘research-intensive’ goes beyond external evaluations of its research and its impact. It underpins the way postgraduate courses are scrutinised and developed. It is embedded in the Department’s expectations of the tutors who teach those courses to provide students with sessions taught by experienced, research-informed practitioners. It is epitomized by the Department’s collaboration with other practitioners, policy-makers and those in industry. It is fundamental to our commitment to reach out to schools and colleges, locally, nationally and internationally, with a vision of transformative educational environments which make policy decisions based on research evidence.
