Giving to Sociology
Oxford has a long and distinguished history of sociology, dating back to the early 20th Century. Building on this legacy, the Department was established in 1999 to provide a renewed focus for sociological research and teaching within the University.
Oxford Sociology combines analytical, empirical, and comparative approaches to develop and test theories that address real-world issues. Our research spans the full breadth of the discipline, including demography, life course studies, family sociology, international comparisons, criminology, collective action, political sociology, and gender.
Reflecting its global outlook, the Department brings together members from over 70 nationalities, creating a dynamic and diverse academic community. Many of our alumni now hold faculty positions across the UK and around the world.
Recognised for sustained academic excellence, Oxford Sociology has consistently ranked among the world’s top five best universities for sociology since 2015, according to the QS World University Rankings by Subject. Since 2019, we have been ranked second in the world and first in the UK and Europe.
Today, we are a thriving community of over 30 faculty and researchers, nine administrative staff, 120 graduate students, and more than 1,200 alumni who remain integral to our vibrant network.
