Giving to Statistics

Ground-breaking research at Oxford in areas as diverse as protein folding, population genetics, epidemiology, disaster management or algorithmic fairness helps science and society make better predictions and decisions.

Oxford Statisticians have played a key role in both the understanding of and the intergovernmental responses to the coronavirus pandemic. For example:

• Professor Christl Donnelly’s epidemiological research informed our understanding of transmission and control of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, and she played a key role in the Royal Statistical Society COVID-19 Task Force.
• Professor Yee Whye Teh has been involved in the DELVE Initiative, also convened by the Royal Society, and has provided input to the UK government through SAGE.
• Professor Charlotte Deane is the UK Research and Innovation COVID-Response Director.
• Professor Chris Holmes and his team developed the statistical algorithms for the NHS-App.

A statistically literate population is of vital importance in the wider world, and we are particularly proud of our alumni whose knowledge and understanding informs a wide range of sectors, including medicine, social policy, climate change, academic and industrial research, finance, technology and biotech.
